POZ - December #168 : The POZ 100 - by Regan Hofmann
Here it is POZ Magazine's Top 100.
Frankly, reading through this list of individuals was part of the inspiration to recommit to this blog and to funnel more of my volunteer energy into HIV/AIDS issues. Enjoy the list and start thinking who you are going to nominate for the next one!

Photos that brought AIDS home...
This photo is so moving as these images are lost to history in the United States. It takes imagery from the African continent to remember our own struggle with this disease was very much in the dark not long ago.
As a person living with HIV infection, I am amazed how the physical transformation of "David" in this photo. How can a disease change someone so drastically? The more I look at the photo, the more I start focusing on David's family and the pain and anguish they demonstrate while saying their last good bye's to their son. Heart renching to watch.

World AIDS Day 2010
Wednesday, December 1, 2010 is World AIDS Day.
What a better day to rededicate myself to this blog. It's an odd thing to have been diagnosed 8 years ago this past August. My health is good and I have a renewed sense of optimism with the Obama administration lifting travel bans to the US, the International AIDS Conference finally returning to the US in 2012, and funding for AIDS organizations receiving more support in a tough American economy. I am fortunate to live in a city [San Francisco] with a great deal of community awareness and support.
There is much to be thankful for...and yet, with those hallmarks, I learned that three friends/colleagues seroconverted this year and started their HIV journey. Hearing that news never gets any easier. Sitting in a room with someone while they experience pain is tough. I still never know what to say...
So, this year, I rededicate myself to this blog, the cause, and those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

HIV Education...
This has to be one of the most eerie HIV education ads...as someone living with HIV, it's hard to watch and not feel like a statistic, but the emotional impact I believe is a compelling device here...The final message: "Every ten seconds a person dies from AIDS. Protect yourselves!"
I welcome your thoughts
I welcome your thoughts
HIV Basics...
I have to say...I LOVE this video...informative and somewhat humorous as well...for those looking for basic information on HIV/AIDS I think this is a good start...
SF AIDS Marathon...Training to be a Hero
This may come as no surprise to many of you, but I will be participating in the San Francisco AIDS Marathon this August 3rd! That's right, 26.2 miles! I expect to log nearly 500 miles in preparing for this event. It's all part of the National AIDS Marathon Training Program, which raises money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, one of the leading providers of AIDS services the Bay Area.
The AIDS epidemic is far from over. More than one million Americans, and 40 million others around the world, are now living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In fact, approximately 1 in every 50 San Franciscans is living with HIV/AIDS. The money we raise will support HIV services and prevention programs in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties -- to help keep people alive until there's a cure. A portion of the funds will also support treatment access in the developing world.
This is why I am committed to raise at least $2,000.00 before May 2nd, although I would like to raise even more. I'm asking for your support. How can you support me?
SEND ME AN EMAIL MESSAGE:- For God's sake I am 36 and no spring chicken...words of encouragement go a long way...[rourkensf@aol.com]
BE A WATER BOY [OR GIRL]:- As my mileage increases I will need cheerleaders along the training path as well as some water to keep up fluids. For every volunteer that shows up in my name, $20.00 is added to my donation site [see and you don't even have to spend money].
SEND ME TRAINING TIPS:- My body is fighting me on this 26.2 mile thing and through my training program, I will log in over 500 miles. Any helpful tips are MUCH appreciated for recovery.
DONATE SOME MONEY:- I am trying to raise $2,000.00 which will support BayArea organizations and some 3rd World organizations in providing treatment options for those living with HIV/AIDS...if you did your taxes and realized you made too much money this year then here's the perfect opportunity to provide to a good cause...Thank you for supporting me in this tremendous undertaking. When I hit the streets [and HILLS!] of San Francisco this August to complete the Marathon, I'll know that you helped me and many others along the way.
Thanks for your support
Rourke!
